…it was 35 years ago tonight that Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen, two of the most uniquely gifted folk musicians America ever produced, were killed in a Louisiana plane crash. Croce was a great storyteller, and not merely in musical terms; the audio file here has Jim introducing a couple of his songs (with a quick bit of Muehleisen’s voice just under halfway through)…

…not nearly as long as We Hold These Truths or On a Note of Triumph, or even Between Americans, but this is among the finest pieces that Norman Corwin ever created or Orson Welles ever uttered near a microphone. Don’t believe me? Then, the next time you see it, I defy you to think of the phrase “the moth is in love with a 60-watt bulb”…

…as you can see, I’ve junked all of the “Audible Scribblings” material. The way that KPHX and Nova M ripped me off, it’s best that I make a clean break from those two-faced punks. In the meanwhile, what will appear here are semi-daily posts that’ll only be up for a few days apiece relating to historical dates and such. Yet another reason to subscribe to the podcast rather than simply visit the page here

Here is the first of my Derby Specials this week. It’s the “UnreportedNews.Net Radio Show” from July 15th of last year, in which I sat in for Sarge Phelps and chatted with Kamikaze Kiwi and Red Rocker of the Arizona Derby Dames, and Pardon My French and Mizz Nashty* of the Arizona Roller Derby, all in-studio, and SmasHer of New Orleans’ Big Easy Rollergirls on the phone line. Check out the web sites and tell ‘em all King Daevid sent ya.
*Mizz Nashty is no longer with the AZRD; in November, she joined the short-lived independent Arizona Bruisers/Phoenix City Rollers, and most recently joined the Arizona Derby Dames when that league absorbed the remnants of the Phoenix City Rollers earlier this month.

…featuring a marvelous narration by Orson Welles. As broadcast on the evening of December 7, 1941. I’ll be touching upon this one as well this Sunday morning. Parts of it fit well with the Obama address…

…now, because you’ve asked for it, I’ll fill y’all in on what my signoff line means. the “peace” part is self explanatory; if you still don’t get it, check out some Dave Garroway clips on YouTube and maybe you’ll get it. There’s two bits to the “oranges” part, however. Remember how Janeane Garofalo used to sign off her Air America show with the word “Peaches” repeated three or four times? I thought that was a neat bit, and I took that to be Janeane wishing some sweetness into the lives of her audience members. I didn’t find out until more recently that it was actually her atonement for a botched interview with the rock musician Peaches. Anyway, I usually prefer oranges to peaches, so I went with oranges instead for my signoff. That’s the first bit. The second is found in the landmark radio broadcast of Norman Corwin’s great epic poem ON A NOTE OF TRIUMPH from V-E Day, May 8, 1945. Listen to it and pay special attention for a line about how now the kids of Poland will know what an orange tastes like…
